South Africa is home to a number of rare and elusive mammals that are a sight to behold if you’re lucky enough to spot them. One such animal is the African wild dog, a highly social predator that has suffered due to habitat loss and human encroachment.
In birding terms South Africa is a must for both the world lister and the leisure birder. For the leisure birder it’s a wonderfully diverse destination in which to see a lot of birds as well as some of Africa’s iconic mammal species in a seemingly endless array of habitat types.

Posted on Robert M Wonderful Safari. I have just returned from a three-week trip with SafariWise in Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. The whole trip was planned very well, the driver/guide was excellent in every way – for ever cheerful, friendly, considerate, fantastically good at spotting all sorts of wildlife and knowing what it is by ear as well as sight. There was one difficult complication caused by the authorities that came completely out of the blue and it was handled with good grace and efficiency. While travel arrangements had to be changed everything that was planned took place. I would be more than pleased to both recommend SafariWise and use them again myself. Posted on ClivePPP A class experience organised by a company that really knows how to run a safari We have just returned from a privately organised trip with SafariWise and can readily recommend them to anyone. Six of us with guide Hano Smit traversed Namibia from Walvis Bay to the Caprivi Strip and then spent a few days in Botswana and Zambia ending up at Victoria Falls. The pre-trip information was extensive, the support and guiding outstanding and the wildlife was amazing. Accommodation was of a consistently good standard and there was a clear effort every day to ensure that we saw as much wildlife as possible. The vehicle was ideal, especially for photographers, and arrived clean inside with clean windows every day. The company is clearly keen to ensure the customer has a memorable experience and our group is a testament to that. We all travelled with the company in 2024 and were so impressed we came back again!Clive and Janine, Cambridge UK Posted on Sarah Namibia's Skeleton Coast and Etosha Pan, an incredible trip. I have recently returned from a trip to Namibia's Skeleton Coast and Etosha Pan.A truly memorable trip. Our guides Andrew du Preez and Hano Smit were exemplary and expertly steered us through the itinerary. Their knowledge was huge and readily shared with us. Andrew spoke of geology, history and culture, all brought alive with interesting stories and anecdotes. Hano's passion for birds was infectious and he rekindled my enthusiasm for birding. The desert landscape was awe-inspiring and remarkably full of life. We added a boat trip to see seals, dolphins, and sea birds. This did not disappoint!. On leaving the coast, we travelled to Damaraland. Utterly beautiful. Etosha was incredible, teeming with mammals and birds under the huge African sky. Here there were many incredible and even emotional encounters with mammals, and birds were spotted by Andrew and Hano which could easily have been missed. The flood lit waterhole at the camp was a real highlight. Last stop was Okonjima Reserve a treasure indeed. Many more 'first sightings ' and close encounters. The travel between stops was made fun by spotting mammals, birds and even reptiles...eagle eyed guides at work! The accommodation and food was lovely throughout and being vegetarian was not a problem. An incredible and busy trip brought alive by our guides. They were knowledgeable, considerate and helpful throughout, always with a lovely sense of humour. A trip to thoroughly recommend, as long as you are prepared for an overwhelming wish to return!! Posted on Gilva T Namibia's Etosha Pan and Skeleton Coast November 2025. An excellent tour led by Hano Smit and Andrew du Preez , encompassing the stark beauty of Deadvlei, Soussuslvei ;the coastal region of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund; Damaraland ;Etosha Pan and Okanjima Plains camp. The birdlife and mammals did not disappoint and each day brought new and different sightings. The geography and geology were outstanding. Hano and Andrew complimented each other very well with their different areas of expertise and accommodated the varying needs of the group with professionalism, understanding and humour. The quality of the accommodation was very good and every aspect of the trip had been well thought out .I cannot recommend this trip enough .It will leave you wanting to return to do more exploring with SafariWise in such a unique country. Posted on Keithc3844 Brilliant wildlife safari tour of Namibia We booked this holiday through Naturetrek, who used SafaiWise to operate the tour with 16 people in Namibia. Neil and Hano of SafariWise were fantastic guides. Namibia is a large country, so a lot of miles were covered, but our guides made it feel relaxed throughout with a perfect balance of great wildlife spotting, smooth organisation and humour. Would definitely recommend. Posted on Sheila W A Thrilling Madagascar Adventure This was a superb wildlife viewing trip, expertly led by Neil MacLeod of Safariwise, with the assistance of knowledgeable local guide Fabrice. Although Madagascar has lost a lot of its forests, those that remain are packed with wildlife – and we saw no less than 24 species of lemur, including close views of the extraordinary Aye-aye. This endangered species taps on the trunks of rainforest trees and listens to the returning echoes to detects cavities within made by beetle larvae. It then chews holes into these with its large front teeth and inserts its elongated middle finger to extract the unfortunate grubs! Other lemurs we saw included the Indri with its strange wailing calls, Black and White Ruffed Lemurs, and tiny mouse lemurs of several species. We were also extremely fortunate to have an excellent sighting of a Fosa – a mongoose relative which has evolved to fill the niche of a medium-sized cat, as there are no true cats in Madagascar. We also saw many species of colourful chameleons and other reptiles, plus similarly colourful frogs, and insects – including the aptly-named Rainbow Locust and Giraffe Weevil. We stayed in some lovely lodges set in stunning surroundings, and the local people were incredibly friendly wherever we went. All in all, another wonderful adventure with the excellent Safariwise. Posted on CMAR2011 Driving from Namibia’s coast to the desert in a week visiting the main sites Berdene organized a great trip to Namibia and we got to visit the coast and the desert. Everything was as planned, the hotels, the car rental and the tours Posted on Jamie Buxton-Gould Magical Madagascar! What an exciting trip meeting the weird and wonderful wildlife of Madagascar! We visited the best places across the island to witness the unique biodiversity, all extremely well organised by our leader Neil and local guide Fabrice. It was thrilling to see such a variety of plants, insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals in some fascinating habitats, including the rainforest and spiny forest. I can't believe some of the close encounters we had with species such as Aye-aye, Indri, mouse lemurs and Fossa! It was enjoyable to meet friendly local people along the way and to see the importance of ecotourism that incentivises protection of the special habitats and species here. Hopefully supporting community-managed reserves and forests can continue to conserve the incredible endemic wildlife. An extraordinarily interesting trip of a lifetime! Posted on Simon J Fantastic three weeks My wife and I have just returned from a fantastic three weeks in Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. We self drive and all the lodges chosen for us by Berdene and Neil were fantastic. A great mix of closeness to wildlife and a little bit of luxury just when we needed to draw breath. We managed to see the ‘big five’ during our stay which was a real treat, especially seeing the lions with just our vehicle watching and the leopard with only one other. I highly recommend using Safariwise to out together your holiday in Africa. They go out of their way to give the customer what they want and know the continent so very well. With luck we will be back and we would certainly be using them again. Posted on Sheila W Uganda JUne 2025 This was my second trip to Uganda with Safariwise, and did what I thought was impossible - by bettering my absolutely amazing first visit of two years ago! The as-always superb leadership of Neil MacLeod, combined with the excellent spotting skills of local leader Gerald, made for some once-in-a-lifetime wildlife viewing experiences. We saw no fewer than six very scarce Shoebills - including a pair of these huge prehistoric-looking waterbirds clapping their massive bills at each other during a courtship display. A wonderfully close encounter with a family of Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest was followed later in the trip by one with a group of around 10 similarly close Chimps in Kibale National Park. We also watched members of a pride of Uganda's famous tree-climbing Lions amongst the branches of a tree adjacent to the road we were on in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and later saw cubs playing on top of a termite mound at Murchison Falls NP. A boat excursion on the White Nile rewarded us with a rare sighting of a threatened African Softshell Turtle – one of the largest species of freshwater turtles, with a shell up to a metre in diameter. Other sightings on the trip included a well-hidden Leopard in a tree, plus all the more frequently-seen mammals such as Giraffes, Buffalo and Hippos, and a plethora of brightly-coloured birds. The lodges we stayed at were without exception of excellent quality, too - and very well situated in close proximity to the wildlife. I can highly recommend Safariwise to anyone wishing for an amazing wildlife experience such as this - either in Uganda or elsewhere in Africa. In my experience - they really are the best!
